Day 5 - Song that Reminds you of Someone

Wish I Didn’t Miss you – Angie Stone

This is my Mums favourite song and we have seen the lady twice in concert now together. The last time we went Angie did a 10 minute rendition of this song and did it in different genres passing through salsa style to Jamaican style and many more – it was spectacular and I turned around to look at my Mum and she was in her element. Whenever I hear this it reminds me of Mum and all the hard times she has been through but then all the good times we have had together when listening to this song! Perfect.

Day 4 - Song that Makes you Sad

Everything you Wanted – Kele

Again this was one of the songs from last year that I listened to most around June time. It was my ‘lets feel good about myself song as I have done nothing wrong and I am a good person’ song. It rung true to me but it makes me sad as it does mean so much when you listen to the lyrics and it takes you back to that time when things were different. It was almost like I listened to it to bring myself down and remind me of something that was past and non-reconcilable.

WOW – who knew talking about songs could be a personal therapy session! However it is an amazing song so I always play it when djing which is a bit strange, feeling sad when you should be on a high. But ignoring the lyrics it’s a fantastic dancing song so worth the play, its just a personal sad song, and I have learnt to appreciate the song now so it doesn’t bring me down anymore. Plus Kele is beautiful especially in his 80's New York style!

Day 3 - Song that Makes You Happy

Emancipate – Kelis

This is a fairly recent song for me, but over Summer when I was going through a series of heartaches and breaks and was very up and down this song was the one that I listened to when I was coming out of the other end. Listening to the lyrics gave me such a buzz and such hope and the sound of the song just makes you smile and want to dance. Perfect for those mornings when you feel glum and you're walking to work, picks you right up!

Without trying to sound too cheesy which is fairly impossible it was my song of freedom, the song that made me just be happy with myself and there is no happiness greater than that right!? I picked this particular video as it wasn’t an official single so no attaching video and this performance has my future wife in it the one and only DJ Rashida!

Day 2 - Your Least Favourite Song

Anything by Morrissey

But for this case: First of the Gang to Die - Morrissey live at Glastonbury

Ok, I have an unprecedented hatred for this man, controversial I know as I live and DJ in Manchester but let me explain. I have grown to ‘appreciate’ some Smiths songs and I understand everything they have done for pop music and the people they have influenced but Morrissey is an arrogant idiot and despite many friends protesting to me this is NOT a good thing, I repeat NOT a good thing!

He treats his fans with massive disrespect and only cares about himself (walking out on stage in a strop despite thousands paying to see him, tearing up £10 a fan asked him to sign so they could never use it). Also he could have done so much for the gay community if he had come out but instead he has kept to himself (which I do admire as well, and I understand this is a more personal issue and has been different reasons to its outcome of being kept a secret) when he could have changed the views on gay rights to all the football fans chanting his song on the terraces and could have helped begin to put an end to homophobia.

For this reason whenever I hear the man voice my skin crawls a little and so my least favourite songs are anything by him solo as what is there to like! I have picked this particular video and song as it reminds me of when I accidentally walked past the pyramid stage at Glastonbury when he was performing with his name written in massive 25 ft lettering. What a pompous idiot. Case closed.

Day 1 - Your Favourite Song

The Undertones – Teenage Kicks

One of the hardest questions to be asked and I always give this answer. I don’t really know why this is my favourite song, I can go months without listening to it but whenever I do it gives me a weird cosmic rock feeling inside. It takes me back to my childhood and dancing at multiple friends birthday parties at the cricket club. It combines happiness and anger in one perfect blend as it makes you want to thrash out and pogo but puts a smile on your face as well. Perfect pop song in so many ways and a song that will never grow old despite its crackling production.
